Celebrating the Legacy of the First Albanian American Congressman and His Tireless Work for Justice, Unity, and Democracy on His Birthday, September 20th.
Today, September 20th, we at “Votra Magazine” are honored to celebrate the birthday of Joseph John DioGuardi, a man whose legacy as a pioneer, patriot, and champion of the Albanian cause spans decades. Joe, born into an Arbëresh family, made history as the first Albanian American voting member of the U.S. Congress, representing New York’s 20th Congressional District from 1985 to 1989.
His deep connection to his Albanian roots has been the guiding force behind his tireless advocacy for the rights and freedoms of Albanians across the Balkans.
Throughout his career and continuing today, Joe’s passion for justice has been unwavering. Alongside his wife, Shirley Cloyes DioGuardi, he founded the Albanian American Civic League (AACL) in 1989, which has been instrumental in promoting Albanian issues and strengthening ties between the U.S. and Kosovo. Together, Joe and Shirley have worked relentlessly to raise awareness about the injustices faced by Albanians in Kosovo, Albania, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and the Presheva Valley.
Their commitment to advocating for democracy, human rights, and peace has been nothing short of inspiring.
Joe’s legacy also extends to his role as a devoted father to his two children, Kara and John, ensuring that his dedication to family and service is passed down to the next generation. As we celebrate his birthday today, we reflect on a life marked by extraordinary achievements and a profound commitment to justice and unity.
On behalf of “Votra Magazine”, we send our warmest birthday wishes to Joseph John DioGuardi. Your contributions have left an indelible mark on the Albanian-American community and beyond, and we are deeply grateful for your service.
May you enjoy this special day surrounded by the love and appreciation of family, friends, and all those whose lives you have touched.
Happy birthday, Mr. DioGuardi!
